The Takeaway Shop

A “make and take-away” craft and local history project in Deptford, curated by artist Amy Lord,

Friday 20 - Friday 27 January 2012

PLACES LIMITED TO 7 PER SESSION - BOOKING ESSENTIAL

For this project artist Amy Lord has brought together hundreds of old photographs and historical facts about her local area Deptford, and curated an accessible version of the local archive – The Takeaway Shop, number82, 82 Tanners Hill, Deptford, London SE8 4PN.

Lord is inviting members of the public to come, discover, and share their knowledge of the local area, and create their own mini-archive in a hand-bound book, to take away and keep. Visitors to The TakeAway Shop will be able to learn craft techniques like simple book-binding and collage, and select what interests them from the images and information collected by Lord.

Deptford is one of London’s most historically rich and culturally significant areas, with a cultural and artistic legacy stretching back way before the YBAs landed at Goldsmiths. Amongst the treasures Lord has collected together, there are fascinating photographs of live modelling in the early days at Goldsmiths Institute, together with stories about historical figures like King Louis Philippe whose visit through New Cross train station coincided with a fire. Lord, who was recently commissioned to make two pieces for the Deptford X festival and whose work includes performances at BAC, The Bluecoat and Green Room Manchester, says

“For this piece I wanted to get down to the bare bones of existence – day-to-day life. I am fascinated by the hundred year-old photographs of places I walk past every day. Learning about history gives you a greater sense of humanity and being part of the bigger picture. It’s important to know the area you live in, what came before you, and who lives here now.”
